When Words Aren't Enough
Sometimes the most painful experiences resist language. You sit down to explain how you're feeling - to a friend, a partner, or even yourself - and the words just aren't there.
Maybe you've tried traditional talk therapy and felt like you were going in circles. Maybe the weight of what you're carrying feels too heavy to put into sentences. Maybe you're supporting a child or teen who can't articulate what's going on inside, but you can see them struggling.
This is exactly what art therapy is designed for.
You don't need to be an artist. You don't need to know how to draw. Art therapy isn't about creating something beautiful - it's about creating something honest, and finding meaning together in what emerges.
What Is Art Therapy?
Art therapy - also called art psychotherapy - is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative expression as part of the healing process. Rather than relying solely on verbal communication, sessions may involve drawing, painting, collage, or other visual materials as a way to access emotions, memories, and experiences that are difficult to put into words.
Art therapy is grounded in psychological theory and practised by trained therapists. It's not art class. The artwork isn't the goal - the insight it generates is.

Meet Abir Ali - Your Art Therapist in Pickering
Abir Ali is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with specialized training in art therapy and art psychotherapy. She completed the Graduate Diploma in Art Therapy/Art Psychotherapy from the Toronto Art Therapy Institute, along with the Online Diploma in Islamic Psychology from Cambridge Muslim College - a unique combination that shapes her deeply integrative, culturally humble approach to care.
Abir's practice is rooted in a belief that we are each the experts of our own experience. Her role isn't to interpret your art for you - it's to create a calm, safe, collaborative space where your own wisdom has room to emerge.
Abir has particular experience supporting:
- BIPOC communities, including refugees and newcomers navigating identity, belonging, and trauma
- Children, teens, and adults across a range of emotional and psychological challenges
- Clients working through anxiety, depression, grief, eating disorders, and the impacts of trauma
- Clients who value non-Western, community-centred approaches to healing
Abir offers sessions in English and Urdu/Hindi, and brings an anti-racist, anti-oppressive lens to all of her work. Her graduate thesis explored how cultural artistic traditions can support decolonization and the reclaiming of identity - a perspective that makes her work genuinely distinctive for clients whose experiences have often been overlooked in mainstream therapy settings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not at all. Art therapy has nothing to do with artistic skill or producing something impressive. The focus is entirely on expression and exploration - not the quality of what you make. Many clients who "can't draw" find art therapy to be one of the most meaningful experiences they've had in therapy.
Talk therapy relies primarily on verbal communication. Art therapy adds a creative element that can help access emotions and experiences that are difficult to put into words. Some feelings are held in the body or in images rather than in language - and art therapy meets you there. Many clients use art therapy alongside talk therapy, or as a standalone approach.
